Sentry Mode is a security feature and added layer of protection available on Teslas that helps to deter theft and vandalism. When enabled, Sentry Mode uses the car’s cameras and sensors to monitor what’s happening around the car when  parked and locked. If a threat is detected, the cameras begin recording and the alarm will activate. You’ll receive an alert on your Tesla app notifying you that an incident has occurred.

If a threat is detected, Sentry Mode can react in these ways:

  • Pulses the headlights
  • Sounds the alarm
  • Displays a message on the touchscreen warning that the cameras are recording
  • Saves footage of the event to a USB drive
  • Notifies the owner via the Tesla mobile app

How to use Sentry Mode- it’s super simple:

  • To use Sentry Mode, enable it on your vehicle’s touchscreen or through the Tesla mobile app.
  • Sentry Mode will remain active until the vehicle is at or below 20% battery.
  • If Sentry Mode is disabled due to low battery, you will receive a notification from the Tesla app.
  • To save footage of events, you must have a USB drive plugged into the vehicle’s front console.
  • You can also use the Tesla app to download footage from Sentry Mode events.

Tesla’s also offers Live Camera, so You are Sentry and can view the vehicle’s surroundings remotely when parked. This can be helpful to view your vehicle to check for safety to get in your car. Once Live Camera is enabled, you can see a live feed from your car’s cameras on your app. You can also honk your horn, flash your lights, and talk through the vehicle’s speaker if you have one equipped.
It’s important to know that Tesla’s Live Camera is end-to-end encrypted and can’t be accessed by them. *This feature is available on iOS and Android with the Tesla app version 4.2.1 or higher and requires Premium Connectivity. Live Camera is not available on Model S & X vehicles produced 2012-2020.
