DRIVING BACK EV GOALS?

Car Dealers EPA Regulations

Originally, proposed EPA regs dictated that by 2032, 2/3 of all new light duty vehicles should be emission free, with the goal to steadily drop greenhouse gas emissions by 2055. The President may revise the rules and relax that strict timeline come spring.

Meanwhile, a group of over 4,700+ car dealers in the U.S. asked President Biden to stop the EPA’s plans for stricter vehicle-pollution standards. They’re worried that the proposed regulations to tackle climate change and  pollutants, aren’t realistic. The dealers argue that the regulations would require them to sell EVs at a rate that’s just not doable right now, even as they committed millions to electrification.

If this proposed change happens, auto manufacturers will be forced to build a certain number of EVs by 2030. Slowing the pace may give the industry more time to address issues such as affordability, charging infrastructure and demand. The EPA regulations can be met through full EVs and also through hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

EV market share reports show that EVs had a 7.6% share of the total U.S. vehicle market in 2023 (Cox Automotive), a number that indicates that EVs are definitely gaining market share in the US.

“Americans bought a record-shattering 1,189,051 electric vehicles (EVs) last year, and we expect that growth to continue into the future,” said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of Industry Insights at Cox Automotive. This is a pretty healthy number, however, the govt and many auto manufacturers are walking back on their forward-looking statements and extending their proposed time frame for electrification goals.
