FCEV Fuel Cell Infrastructure

Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs) are electric vehicles that use a fuel cell to generate electricity. The fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity, water and heat. The electricity powers the vehicle’s motor, while the water vapor and heat are released through the exhaust system.

Check out some advantages over other types of EVs:

  • Fast fueling time: Can be refueled in just a few minutes, just like ICE (Internal Combustion Engine: gas-powered) vehicles. This is an advantage over battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), which can take more time to fully charge.
  • Long range: Have a range of about 300 miles on a full tank of hydrogen, which is comparable to the range of many ICE vehicles.
  • Zero emissions: FCVs produce zero emissions when they operate, making them a more environmentally friendly option than gas-powered vehicles.

But wait, FCVs do have some disadvantages:

  • High cost: FCVs are more expensive than BEVs and ICE vehicles.
  • Limited availability: There are currently only a few FCV models available on the market, and the hydrogen refueling infrastructure is not as widespread as the gasoline refueling infrastructure. (Good luck with that, unless you are in Cali.  There are just over 50 fuel stations).
  • Hydrogen safety: Hydrogen is a flammable gas, so there is some risk associated with the handling and storage of hydrogen.

Safety Tips:

  • Always follow the instructions provided by the hydrogen refueling station.
  • Do not smoke or use any open flames near the refueling station.
  • Be aware of the potential for hydrogen leaks. If you smell hydrogen, immediately evacuate the area and call 911.
  • Only refuel your FCEV at a certified hydrogen refueling station.

If you’re considering buying a used fuel cell ZEV, make EXTRA sure you consider the availability of hydrogen refueling stations in your area.

Things to consider when buying a used fuel cell ZEV:

  • The age of the vehicle: Fuel cell technology is still relatively new, so it’s important to buy a vehicle that is relatively new. This will help to ensure that the fuel cell is still in good condition and that the vehicle will have a long lifespan.
  • The warranty: Most fuel cell vehicles come with a warranty on the fuel cell.
  • The maintenance schedule: Fuel cell vehicles require regular maintenance, but the maintenance schedule is generally less frequent than it is for a ICE vehicle.

Go electric ✌️
